Registered agent or business address: what's the difference?

Two US addresses, two different roles. What each one allows, and what it doesn't.

Updated November 3, 2026

The registered agent: a legal requirement

Every LLC must appoint a registered agent in its state of formation. It receives service of process and official state mail on behalf of the company, and its address appears in public records.

The business address: a practical choice

The business address is for your business mail: invoices, suppliers, customers. Mail is received, scanned and forwarded if needed. It is optional.

What to avoid

Providers generally do not allow the registered agent address to be used as a business address. And some banks or platforms may refuse a mail receiving address: check their rules.
