No SSN or ITIN needed
A foreign owner can get an EIN for their LLC without a Social Security number or an ITIN.
The form prepared for you
Classification, business start date, reason for applying: mistakes on the SS-4 are a common cause of delays.
Essential for what comes next
You need the EIN to open a bank account, use payment platforms and file your returns.
What is an EIN?
The EIN is a nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It identifies your company with the federal tax authority, much like a company registration number does in other countries.
Even an LLC with no employees needs one as soon as it opens a bank account or must file a federal return.
How a foreign owner gets an EIN
Forming the LLC
You can only apply once the LLC exists, with its Articles of Organization.
Preparing the SS-4
Form SS-4 is completed with the details of the company and its responsible party.
Submitting to the IRS
Without an SSN or ITIN the online application is not available: the form goes by fax or by mail, following IRS procedures.
Receiving confirmation
The IRS issues a confirmation letter (CP 575). Your bank will ask for it.
